; M# w- m9 j9 n( B7 Z& q+ WAs Fresno Valley crops begin to bloom, Fresno County Sheriff's Office Agricultural Crimes Task-Force say bees are becoming a hot commodity for thieves. The crimes are costing beekeepers tens of thousands of dollars.

Buzzing bees are music to a farmer's ears this time of year.% ~, H5 a6 b; E6 R# l, E6 n G' O* v+ c

The stacked, white boxes - or beehives - are seen in groves of fruit and nut trees across the Central Valley. Fresno County detectives say they're also the target of thieves.

) m& M+ J/ `' W" ESgt. Ryan Hushaw said, "Recently we had two rather significant thefts of beehives. One occurred in the Coalinga area, the second occurred in the Firebaugh-Dos Palos area. Both of those thefts combined amounted to $50,000 in loss."

' t5 X; Z+ E) s' m0 _+ z/ j8 K+ ? SIn both cases, more than 60 beehives were stolen.

The thefts don't come easily." a" K0 ?# S$ \: k, `; p$ `
) p, C- I7 p$ ~6 W6 @Maksim Chernyakov, the owner of Maksim's Apiaries, said, "Somebody has to have a truck, a forklift, possibly a beekeeper. Somebody that's going to steal bees because not everybody and not everyone knows what bees are all about."

! D3 i ]3 c0 _' D! ?' `9 J! D"You're average criminal, you're average crook is not going to want to mess with bees for very obvious reasons. So, generally, we believe it's someone who knows something about the industry," Sgt. Hushaw said.0 |! {5 L5 r b9 R5 V: B1 v7 ~

The bees are crucial to pollinating trees and helping a farmer's crop grow. Many growers spend thousands of dollars to lease the bees and beekeepers rely on the hives for their income. Chernyakov has been a victim of beehive theft before.1 H" r M. Q" ?) Z

Chernyakov said, "I've lost, in a season, close to $10,000-12,000."4 S. Z# {! S# _) R

According to detectives, beekeeping can be a lucrative business so once the hives are stolen they can end up outside of California on farms all across the country. |
